A blueprint for car-free cities.
Vision Lab
12 Weeks | Berlin
We joined a Mercator-funded research project on the topic of alternative mobility concepts for car-free areas to explore the potential of urban tech in making this vision happen.
Context
Car-free cities and districts have been openly discussed on an international level, yet not many attempts have been made to establish frameworks and guidance for policymakers. The project “Verkehrswende Erleben” is trying to establish a narrative around car-free cities in Germany in a so-called “Starter Kit”.
Our Role
As experts on the topic of urban technologies and smart cities, we joined the research phase to further study disruptive urban technologies and innovation of the future, that could be supportive for car-free areas as well as those to have a potential negative impact on the development of alternative mobility concepts.
Results
Over three months we led the research team of future urban technologies, presented our findings and developed a catalogue of possible interventions and implementation strategies for these technologies. We were also able to provide the research team with valuable connections for potential ambassadors to partner for the project.

About the project
Verkehrswende Erleben
“Verkehrswende Erleben” is a research project by WZB, paper planes e.V., and TU Berlin about establishing alternative city districts to prove and convince that a life in cities without a private car is possible and enjoyable. The Mercator funded project aims to explain and demonstrate how to successfully implement solutions to support alternative modes of transport and use the freed-up urban space. For the project, civil society and experts from fields of mobility and sustainability are invited to comment and co-develop the framework.
