Climate and tech strategy blueprint for Kiel's new smart district.
Testbed for Innovation
4 weeks | Kiel
The City of Kiel and Yellow Z embarked on an ambitious multi-year project to retrofit a former military base and partnered with Buro Happold to create a new smart district strategy focused on climate resilience, in Holtenau-Ost.
We leverage our expertise in urban tech and climate tech, to ensure the new waterfront is equipped with solutions that contribute to better residential, business, and leisure areas—setting the stage for a new innovation testbed in the EU.
Context
Kiel, a German city located by the Baltic Sea, sought to reimagine a former military base into a model district for climate resilience and sustainable urban living. To bring this vision to life, the City of Kiel partnered with Buro Happold, an engineering consultancy renowned for delivering innovative solutions for complex projects.
Our Role
We joined forces with the Buro Happold team to identify macro and micro trends in smart city and climate tech that will be relevant to the waterfront development. Our collaborative approach included workshops and joint discussions to determine which technologies would best fit each sector of the district and their implementation timeline.
Results
As the waterfront development project progresses through its planning stages, the City of Kiel and Buro Happold now have the blueprint for implementing urban tech solutions from day one. Our insights have informed a strategic plan that outlines the integration of advanced technologies through time and across different district functions. When implemented, the district will be a testbed for cutting-edge urban planning and serve as an inspiration for future developments worldwide.
