Unlocking a city with a stakeholder framework.
Strategy Tool + Framework
2 Years
Cities around the world are trying to become smarter and more sustainable, yet innovative new solutions often fail, because they are not sensitive to their local context.
City ABC is a new language that helps different actors to decode local power dynamics and successfully navigate city ecosystems.
Context
Understanding the balance of power or ecosystem in every city can be difficult. Still, it is important to define the right strategy and approach. For this, you need a rather simple framework, because comparisons between cities tend to be complicated and not helpful.
Our Role
Cities are ever-changing ecosystems of their kind and they are neither only a set of companies and private initiatives, nor only administration. This is why we created the approach of the City ABC based on the research of PCH Innovations, Porsche SE and ifmo. Our aim was not only to develop a method to decode city ecosystems but also to provide a simple language for urban non-professionals to talk about cities.
Results
We developed a framework to decode and navigate within city ecosystems, which can be used for any kind of business wanting to implement or sell their solution in a certain city. The tool helps to analyze the different stakeholders’ needs and demands, helping companies to custom tailor their products.

About the tool:
CityABC
City ABC is a consulting tool for businesses, administration or activists to decode their local ecosystems, understand the city’s powers and their needs to further tailor their services and products.
In our daily work, we see how difficult it can be to fully understand the dynamics of urban ecosystems. Each city constitutes a different array of stakeholders, a mix of their soft and hard influences and interests. Startups require this knowledge to grow their business successfully but not always have the right resources for that. This is when our tool comes in place.
